Honeymoon: Friday

Honeymoon: Friday

Outside our fabulous hotel

Our last day in NOLA we decided to find a local rum distillery we had heard about. Chris and I have really enjoyed learning about the processes of making different beers/alcohols.

Neither of us really liked rum.

Notice I say liked.

As in past tense.

Whiskey Barrels that the rum ages in

We were educated and learned that we actually really enjoy it.  The local distillery is a small operation of about 8 people.  The owner is an artist and puts a surprise piece of art on every label.  There is still a water line inside from where the flood waters were during the hurricane, but it was impressive to see how quickly they started over and how much survived the 8 feet of water.

Molasses

They just began distilling a ginger rum which is an aged rum with loads of ginger floating in it.  We also tried a cajun spiced rum full of sweet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, but with a spicy cajun twist – we were welcomed with a big glass of the cajun rum with iced tea.  We also tried the 10 year rum that had a similar taste to whiskey because of the process of aging it in barrels.

Good-bye New Orleans

We drove the day and into the evening to Memphis, Tennessee.  When we arrived we found a place to park and engaged the most excited parking attendant ever in a conversation.  She gave us some ideas of BBQ and live music spots.  We hit up Beale street and ducked into the Blues City Cafe and were not disappointed by the live music or the food.  Our server was amazing and the ribs fell off the bone.  Some of the best we’ve ever had.

We also had our own form of entertainment watching the police wand EVERYONE that was entering Beale street.  We put it together that there had been a stabbing the night before and they must have been taking extra precautions however it didn’t make me feel better as I watched Chris’ eyes get big and felt my chair move as 400 pounds hit the cement outside the window behind me.  I turned around to see two cops had tackled a man and a third helped cuff him and carry him away.  We’ve never been so close to something you only see on TV.Thanks to our waiter we sneaked back on to Beale street without going through security and walked around listening to music.

We got a hotel in Mississippi that night – not too far from Memphis (mostly just to add another state to our trip)
